This is a Monumental carved wooden folk Buddha from Laos, South East Asia.  Often Termed "Cave Buddha' such primitive , almost tribal images have always interested me. According to locals, such Buddha are carved as offerings to local temples, some of which are in cave monastaries, where thousnads of images of the Buddha can be found.  This is the largest example I have found measuring 38 inches tall , note the old bowtie like repairs to stress fractures in the back, and it appears to have many layers of gold paint, suggesting many years that it was maintained on a temple shrine.
