This is a rare Kwoma Pig Skin shield, Kwoma Washkuk, east Sepik Province, Papua New Guinea.
The shield is made from a wood and rattan frame with stretched wild boars hide. The shield shows signs of use and wear and is an antique example.
The Washkuk were known for shields made of pig skin and crocodile skin that were made in the manner of the present example. It is quite possible these were actually used in combat, though wooden shields were the shields of choice for such endeavors, probably leaving the hide shields as prestige or dance items.
Provenance: Field collected C. 1975 by John C. Edler. The Shield measures 53.5 inches tall.
