A Tall slender cylindrical carved wooden fetish with highly stylized features and well handled surface patina, on long iron spike.
According to literature , among the Wurkun ( or Junkun) if a member of the tribe suffers misfortune or disease, they consult a shaman priest or healer.
Before the healing ceremony, the individual is instructed to commission kundul figures such as this, typically carved by blacksmiths from the community. To activate the figure for use in the healing ceremony, the healer sprinkles offerings of animal blood. This idol has a layered and encrusted surface that is incredibly weathered and worn. I have no doubt that it has had traditional field use.
The sculpture measures 26 inches tall, 39 inches tall on its custom display stand and including the metal spike.
Provenance: A private New jersey collection.
