A fine Yoruba olumeye, a traditional hand-carved wooden sculpture of a kneeling female devotee with an offering bowl. A very fine old example from Nigeria, the name Olumeye translates to "the one who knows honor" , or "knows respect." Such bowls were used to offer kola nuts to important guests.
This is a well used old example, the base shows extensive weathering and so the figure has been custom mounted to a professional museum style display stand and measures 24 inches tall x 12 inches front to back.
Yoruba peoples, Nigeria, West Africa. Provenance: A private NYC collection.
